I suspect that the MBR on my laptop somehow got corrupted. How can I fix it?
I used the "FDISK /MBR" command in Win98 but that doesn't work in XP.

Insert your Windows XP disc in your computer. Boot from the CD. At the
first screen where you are prompted to choose between the options press the
"R" key to load into recovery console. Enter your administrator password
when asked(if you have not set one leave it blank and press enter). When you
are at the C:\Windows> Prompt type in chkdsk /p when that finishes type in
fixboot and y to the question. Then type exit to restart your computer.
This will fix the boot sector on your hard drive. Good Luck,

Joe

I do not have a Windows XP disk. The operating system was pre-installed on
my notebook pc. Is there any other way to do it?

If it is in fact a problem with the MBR then you could try MBRWORK
from the free utilities section at http://www.bootitng.com

If it is some other problem with the disk data structure then you
could create a bootable CD using Bart's PE Builder from
http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/

Create the CD and boot the laptop with it. Open a Command Prompt
window and run CHKDSK /R

Good luck

Use "BootItNG" to restore the MBR
