If it is in fact a problem with the MBR then you could try MBRWORK
from the free utilities section at
http://www.bootitng.com
If it is some other problem with the disk data structure then you
could create a bootable CD using Bart's PE Builder from
http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/
Create the CD and boot the laptop with it. Open a Command Prompt
window and run CHKDSK /R
