Post subject: Codec problem (I think) with TotalMedia TV stick
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windowsxp>video (more info?)

I'm having problems with my FreeCom USB TV which runs ArcSoft TotalMedia
3.0 software. The software plays DVDs and MPG files without problems
but when I try to load the TV module it gives this error message: "The
device is not available, or is being used by another application.
Please close any applications that may be using the device and try
again." Needless to say, there are no other applications running
AFAIK.

Yesterday, I downloaded and installed a program called burn4free
yesterday to burn some files to DVD and I think this may have caused
the problem. I have now uninstalled this software.

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the Freecom USB/TV stick drivers,
the TotalMedia software and all of the files I found in Program
Files/Common Files/Arcsoft. However, the problem persists.

FWIW, I downloaded a little program called 'Sherlock' which checks the
codecs. This reports a problem with the ArcSoft MPEG Video decoder and
tells me that "The driver file for this codec was not found. This
probably means the codec was not uninstalled properly". The file is
called "mpgvideo.ax".

Can anyone help me sort out this problem, as I'm getting increasingly
ratty without my TV?

With thanks
Steve
