Will some one please tell me where to get a program (pref. free) that
will capture video with audio as it comes from a URL? I want to
capture a video file from a URL from a local TV station. They did some
interviews I'd like to keep.

If this isn't the correct newsgroup, please direct me to the correct one.

Thanks

Henry

Andrew

I don't understand about media encoder 9. It's not on my computer.
Will you go into more detail.

When the video is running, file>select>save as, the save as is grayed
out and can't be clicked.

Thanks

Henry

I installed Windows media encoder 9 series and set it to capture
audio/video. Only the audio was shown, the video was grayed out. I
then installed the encoder 9 codecs, and that didn't help either. The
video is grayed out. I can't copy the video from the TV url.

Please advise

Henry

Snip

You are probably talking about flash, it is used for streaming.
The format will be .flv
The easiest method is to have it converted online.
Open this site: http://vixy.net/
Paste the URL
Select what format to save as
Then select convert and download the clip(s)

When I do this I get the following message:
Error: URL resolve error. (YouTube.com is down??)

I have tried this site before and could never get it to work.

So specifically it is a YouTube clip that you want to download,
you failed to make that clear. You said it was a local TV station
Try this but YT is making it differcult for them to work.

I tried it with a YouTuube URL and it "seemed" to work, but I can't
find the file on my HD. Where does it put it please?

Let me be more clear. I originally wanted to download from a local TV
station and someone suggested WM Recorder. I downloaded that and it
worked like a charm. I tried your suggestion of http://vixy.net/ with
the TV station URL and that's when I got the previously reported error
message. When I use it with YouTube URL's it never works, or if it
does I can't find the file afterward. I searched my HD for *.flv and
got nothing. I then tried your suggestion of
http://www.youtubegrabber.info/ and after entering a YouTube URL got
nothing.

Here's two URL's to try if you like.

TV Station:
http://wm.kare.gannett.edgestreams.net/news/extras/120507_349805_bravi...are.wmv

YouTube: http://jp.youtube.com/watch?v=exyJ2CSfrHo

====================================
When using the http://vixy.net/ site with YouTube...
the first step simply converts the video clip to
a different format...avi for example. Next...
you have to download the converted file to your
hard drive as follows:

After the file conversion is finished you will see
the following dialog on the screen:

Conversion Finished. Please download the following link:.
Download the converted video

You can right click "Download the converted video"
and choose... "Save Target As"...this will open the
"Save As" dialog that allows you to choose a save
location on your hard drive. Choose...Desktop...
and click the "Save" button.

After the file is downloaded you can go to your
desktop and move the file to any folder you
choose.

Note: I've noticed that sometimes the conversion
will fail...I think this is due to high traffic on the site...
the solution is to simply try again.

This first one is so easy! Do Not open the link
But place cursor on the link then RIGHT click
A menu will appear, select "Save target as"
A dialog will appear, use the drop down to select
what folder to save to (My Docs or My Videos etc)
It will be downloaded as a WMV to the folder

http://wm.kare.gannett.edgestreams.net/news/extras/120507_349805_bravi...are.wmv>
(Remember, do not double click, but RIGHT click and
select "Save target as")

YouTube:
snipped

You really have little grasp of how these things work it seems,
YouTube are blocking these tools from grabbing - it produces
an error!
But a search of:"Britains Got Talent * Paul Potts WOWS with
Nessun Dorma!" Produced this 7 min high quality clip that you
can download:
http://tinyurl.com/2v8vjz

Once site has loaded, you will see mid screen is a playbutton
and a download button, just double click the download button
and then select what folder to save to.

When I right click on the URL I don't get an option for "Save target
as" but I do get an option for "Save link target as...". When I do
this I get a message that says "The link could not be saved. The web
page might have been removed or had its name changed". Is there a
place in XP Pro that allows "Save target as" to be in the right click
menu?

I had to download and install DivXWebPlayer before I could do what you
said. I don't know where you got the tinyurl from, but my URL I sent
you didn't act like you describe; ie, I had no play or download
option, the video just started playing. I just tried my URL again and
it just started playing - no play or download choices. How did you
get your URL to have those choices in them please? Yes I have little
grasp about how these things work, but I'm trying to learn. With yours
and others help that's heppening. Thanks.

This is the first link as a Tiny
Place your cursor on the link
RIGHT click
Select: Save target as
(Do not select any other option)
The dialog will appear
Select what folder to save to
It will be saved as a WMV

http://tinyurl.com/3xfuo5

You have now installed the DivX web player.
(My apoligies, I took it for granted all had DivX installed)
You should have got a prompt to close all browser windows
during download/install and then to reboot.
If you haven't rebooted to clear the cache then do so now
as that was probably the problem.
Once your comp has rebooted log back onto this group
and to this post, then:

This is the second link of the fat bloke with bad teeth
singing opera on a talent show.
DO NOT RIGHT click on this link, you have to open this link
http://tinyurl.com/2v8vjz
(Do NOT Right click this link, just left click once to open)

Once the link has opened, you will see a still image grab
from the clip in the middle of screen.
Do NOT click the play button.
In the middle of screen will now be two icons,
One is the diamond shaped play button
and to the right is the download button which
looks like a downward pointing dotted line with pointer.

Click on the download icon.
The download dialog will appear
Select what folder to save to.
The clip is a huge 84mb file size of high quality video
and wide bandwidth stereo.
Once you have downloaded it will playback in DivX player
or Videolan VLC.
If you wish to convert the file to another/smaller file type
you will have to use tools/tutorials such as these listed:
http://www.videohelp.com/guides?howtoselect=4%3B13

With my right click I don't have a "Save target as" but a "Save link
target as". However, clicking on that now gives me a save box and
when I save the file it opens OK. Second however, when I click on
*my* URL http://jp.youtube.com/watch?v=exyJ2CSfrHo I get a box that
says save, but it saves only the html page (in what looks like
Japanese) that the video is on. It does not save the video.

I did what you said and low and behold there was now a play button and
a download arrow. I clicked the download arrow and the file was
downloaded and works. However, when I click on my URL:
http://www.flixxy.com/voice-talent-opera-singer.htm I only get the
play button and not the download arrow.

It seems only your tinyurl's work for either of these. I tried both of
my URL's as tinyurl's and that made no difference. What do you get
when you use my URL's please?

I want to correct something here. When I did what you said it did
save "something" but it wasn't the video. It was a 1KB file (which I
looked at with a text editor) that had directions to the original URL
on the TV station. That then called up the video and so it appeared
like it was working. In a fashion I guess you could say it was, but
those TV station URL's aren't going to be there forever. So I think
my problem is when I right click the URL I don't get a "Save target
as..." but I get a "Save link target as...". I have to figure out
how to get a "Save target as..." in my right click menu.

I certainly hope I'm making sense to you. Thanks for hanging in there
with me.
