BenQ/Acer Scanner driver problem

Not sure if this is where I should post.

I recently reinstalled winxp sp2 and cannot make an Acer ScanPrisa 124OUT
model 6682-A3A work again. I have downloaded the recommended driver and
software in mirascanv403u10.zip from BenQ and reinstlled a couple of times
according to BenQ instructions to no avail. When ever an application calls
the scanner I get:

Read image failure!

Please restart scanner.

Code [2882:1118]

I have not been able to get much help from google.

Any help appreciated, John.

Uninstall the drivers and software.
disconnect scanner
reboot
reinstall driver
reboot
connect scanner
reinstall software
reboot
