Equipment and relevant software: Acer Aspire 9500, Windows XP SP2, Realtek
High Definition Audio.

When the computer is cold booted sometimes there is a message
"AzMixerSel.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close.", hot
rebooting usually temporarily resolves the problem.

AZMixerSel.exe has been traced to the folder C:\Program Files\Realtek\
InstallShield, at the same time I noticed there is a second Realtek
installshield folder located at C:\Program files\Realtek\Audio\InstallShield
which does not have AzMixerSel.exe file.

The computer is outside the guarantee period, can anyone suggest a possible
solution for my problem?

Andrea

I believe both folders should contain the file. In the registry see
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run, on the
right pane the path to the file is on the Data column. See if the file is
present.

You can try updating your Realtek audio driver in the Device Manager.

If you'd rather not update the driver and just prevent the file from
executing at startup, go to Start>Run and type "msconfig". Click the Startup
tab and uncheck AzMixerSel.exe.

Andrea

You might use Autoruns to see if you find where AzMixerSel.exe loads
from and which folder the start up points to:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/ProcessesAndThreads/Autoruns.mspx

With Autoruns you can uncheck an item, which disables it from starting,
or you can can right click an item and then delete it. If you uncheck
you can recheck to re-enable the item. It is a much safer approach than
editing the Registry. Another useful feature of the programme is that
you can right click an item and select Search Online to get information
about the item selected.

Hope this helps.

Rey and Gerry, thank you for your replies I have archived them for future
reference.
Before your replies were published my friend suggested clearing the Prefetch
folder, he explained that the Prefetch folder would be re-compiled when the
computer was next rebooted.
Surprise! Surprise! I know it's early days yet but this action appears to
have solved the problem.
