Hi, I had some files on my external harddrive that i encrypted a few months
back. I recently formatted my computer and when I tried to access the files,
I got an access denied message.

I went into the security tab setting, and set my user and administrators to
have full access, and took ownership, (and the users and groups in the
security tab confirm this), but when I try to open files it is still saying
access denied.

Is there anything else i can do, or any way to confirm if i did anything
wrong?

Thanks,
Vasant

If you used EFS to encrypt them and didn't keep a copy of your key, then
your files can't be accessed whether you have ownership or not - you need
that EFS key to decrypt them.

Yes.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/security/learnmore/encryptdata.mspx

The "Encrypt contents to secure data" option is part of EFS.

Also see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/223316

specifically "Why you must back up your certificates" which includes this:

"Because there is no way to recover data that has been encrypted with a
corrupted or missing certificate, it is critical that you back up the
certificates and store them in a secure location."

If you don't have your original EFS key, your files are unrecoverable.
