I haven't seen anyone respond yet to the "original" question here, which was
how to delete one of these problem emails from the INBOX. The Alt Y is only
an option from the DELETED folder....??

Try WmUtil http://www.oehlp.com

or search the Knowledgebase for a non-existing article on how to fix it
since Microsoft apparently deems it not to be a problem.

One blocking you from sending in the Inbox????? That's interesting.

IOh well, low away the message stores, restart WinMail new and empty then
drang drop the old .eml files back into WInMail.

Windows Mail has a newer (to them) form of database. Each email is stored

separately.

Do the following:

1) Open Control Panel then select Folder Options.

a) click on the Views tab

b) Select "Show hidden files and folders"

c) Uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types"

d) click APPLY then OK.

e) Close Control Panel

2) From Windows Mail

a) Click on the Tools menu

b) click on Options

c) click on the Advanced tab

d) click the Maintenance button

e) click the Store Folders button.

f) make a note of the location of the message stores. It will be

something like:

C:\Users\<account name>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Mail

g) close Windows Mail

3) Open Windows Explorer

When it opens, you will see a small black triangle next to the user account

name. Click it to collapse it.

For the following, the triangle will not appear till you put the mouse over

the element in question.

Move the mouse to the "Computer" line. A triangle will appear, click on it

to expand it.

You should see something like "Local Disk (CSmile"

Click on the triangle to expand it.

Locate "Users" and click on the triangle next to it to expand it.

Locate <username> and click on the triangle next to it to expand it.

Locate "AppData" and click on the triangle next to it to expand it.

Locate "Local" and click on the triangle next to it to expand it.

Locate "Microsoft" and click on the triangle next to it to expand it.

Now, in the right window pane, locate Windows Mail.

Click on it.

In the left window pane, scroll upward till you see "Local Disk (CSmile"

Now, in the right window pane, hold them left mouse button down on the

Windows Mail folder.

Drag it to the "Local Disk (CSmile" and release the mouse button.

Select MOVE Here.......

Now, this may take a bit to get done, depending upon how much mail is there.

Give it time.

Now, when it's done, create a new folder name Windows Mail to replace the

moved one in the

C:\Users\<account name>\AppData\Local\Microsoft folder.

Now start Windows Mail.

It will be empty but that's no biggie.

Create a couple of folders in Windows Mail and name them Old Mail, Old

Sent.

Click on the Old Mail folder to open it.

Resize Windows Mail so you can see both Windows Explorer and Windows Mail.

In the Windows Mail folder you will see a Local Folders folder, click the

triangle to expand it.

Locate the Inbox folder.

In this folder you will see a lot of .eml files. These are the old emails.

Drag and drop ONLY the .eml files to the Old Mail folder in Windows Mail.

Do similar for Sent Items to the Old Sent folder.

Now, see if Windows Mail works for you.

I know you guys have suggested several methods to this problem, but I am
computer stupid!! I tried the "Alt" "E" "Y" method and can't seem to get
that to work. Is there any other solution that I can try before I have to
call a tech person in to try and fix it for me?

That's pretty clever!
Others who are bothered by the 'ghost' messages in the
Inbox or Deleted Items folder should use your method.
It should tide us over until the new mail client arrives.

I had this problem with a message in my inbox and although it didn't
stop me from using windows mail in any way it was bloomin' annoying! As
I don't use 'flagging' on my email all I did in the end was setup a
customised view so that all flagged messaged were hidden and then
flagged the email giving the error - bingo email header goes bye bye!
Like a doctor, it doesn't solve the problem but it masks it quite well!
Hope this helps.

I don't think you'll see a fix from Microsoft any time soon. My current
theory, and it's only a theory, is that an anti-virus is causing the problem
by deleting messages as they are saved to the hard drive even though email
scanning is turned off. My problem appears to have gone away after
switching to Avast.

Have you tried marking the message as read and then deleting it? That's
what I've been doing and so far it has always worked. Other things:

Try repairing the database with WMUtil from www.oehelp.com

There are two copies of WindowsMail.MSMessageStore, One in
%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Microsoft\Windows Mail
and one in
%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Microsoft\Windows Mail\Backup\New
If you delete both of these the database will be rebuilt. However, while no
messages should be lost, some may be downloaded again and you may lose some
record of which have been read. I recommend that you only do this when they
are causing you trouble, like when they are in the Outbox. Otherwise I now
just mark them as read and ignore them.

If none of those fixes work for you or you're afraid to try them, use a
different program like Thunderbird, which is free.

I too have tried all the suggested fixes except resorting to a different
virus scan program. So since none of these things worked for me and I do not
feel comfortable doing anything to technical to my computer now what? Are you
saying to get a different e-mail software or stop using McAfee and get
something else? Microsoft has no resolution to this catastrophie. I have had
other issues with the security preventing me from doing things with my
computer so I guess its time to remove McAfee and get something different.
What is the suggested thing to do here and which program should I attempt to
get for a virus protection?

Uninstall McAfee. It and Norton Antivirus are the biggest threat to the
proper operation of Windows Mail.
Download and install the free Avast antivirus program:
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html
Be sure to choose the option to disable email scanning.

What Gary said.
Or switch to Thunderbird (or something else).
To tell the truth, McAfee and Norton and good for Window, either.

Go to Edit | Empty Deleted Items and do it several times and some are
reporting that it slowly gets rid of the messages.
